Whewwww, life is busy in this current season. Like, I blink and it’s Monday again, busy. Between working a full time job, being a wife, step-mom, daughter, friend, plus a never ending to-do list, it sometimes feels like there’s not much time left to actually, well, live. And while I am eternally grateful for the chaos, I’ve also discovered that carving out time for myself is essential to maintaining my sanity. Here are a few of my favorite ways to do that and how I make sure I am enjoying life rather than merely surviving it.
1- Take a Bubble bath
There is absolutely nothing more relaxing to me than a hot bath with Epsom salt and candles. In my book, this is the epitome of self care and one of my all time favorite past times. My husband usually has to all but drag me out before I turn into a raisin. Seriously, it’s my favorite. The scented candles (yes, I know these are bad, but I can’t bring myself to give them up yet) and oil diffuser create such a peaceful ambiance. Top it all off with lavender Epsom salt and you’ve got a recipe for a relaxing night. I do this at least once a week if not more. Epsom salt has magnesium in it which has the potential to improve circulation, restore muscle function, and may help alleviate pain. The essential oils found in my favorite brand also help to add some major moisture to your skin! *Please consult your healthcare provider to ensure Epsom salt is a safe option for you.

2- Make the most of your mornings
I find that personally for me, the morning time is usually my best chance at a little peace a quiet, however fleeting it may be. I try to wake up early enough to allow myself 15-30 minutes to read my devotional, drink coffee (absolutely essential), play the New York Times games, and reflect on the things I have to be grateful for. This sets me up for success and helps me to get in a positive frame of mind for the day. I also love to use my ice roller and throw on some hydrogel eye patches. This really elevates the experience, jolts my skins awake, and gives comfort to the bags under my eyes that refuse to go away regardless of how much sleep I get, sigh***.

3- plan your outfits ahead
Plan ahead. Take pride in picking out your outfit for the following day or if you’re really feeling spicy, plan out the whole week. There’s something about having my outfits already picked out that feels magical. Like I have my own personal wardrobe assistant. Even if that person is actually me. I’ve used an app for this before and I loved it, but I am currently attempting to use a Notion planner template that has a wardrobe manager included in it. I am still learning how to utilize it, but so far I am impressed. It even allows you to track your cost per wear. Talk about efficient! The biggest challenge I’ve encountered when it comes to outfit planning via an app is actually finding time to take pictures of every article of clothing. BUT In the long run, I can definitely saves a ton of time as opposed to digging through my closet trying to piece together an outfit.

4- simplify things as much as possible
So this isn’t really romantic, but the way it frees up your time certainly is. Wash a load of dishes and laundry everyday. This is the single most helpful tip I can give anyone who works and has a family to take care of, but also enjoys a semi-clean home. Instead of feeling like the dishes and laundry are a huge, looming, dreadful task, it takes me maybe 10-15 minutes total to do both. And then by the time the weekend rolls around, I’m not playing catchup on everything I didn’t have the energy for during the week! It’s been a game changer. The Glam Wash laundry detergent from The Tyler Candle Company in the scent Diva really elevates the experience of laundry!
5- get outside
I can tell a huge difference in my mood and overall wellbeing after I’ve been able to be in nature for a few minutes. Get outside feel the sunshine on your skin if possible everyday, even if it’s only for a few precious moments. It can help reduce anxiety and enable you to get some vitamin D- don’t forget the sunscreen though! I personally love to walk around in my yard barefoot for a few moments. I believe the technical term for this is grounding, but there is just something about having my feet on the grass and soil that makes me feel completely at peace. If you’ve never tried it, I highly recommend. The next time you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed, slip off your shoes and take a stroll outside.
6- Spend time with people you love
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized how important it is to slow down and spend time with the people you love. The chaos and frustrations of everyday life will mostly always be there, like it or not, but the people you love and care about may not be. I’ve learned how precious life is and to never take the people we love for granted. So if at all possible, set aside at least one hour a week to be with a few of your favorite people, even if thats your dog. During this time, try to be fully present and engaged, not on your phone. I could use some work in that department too! But I am aiming for progress, not perfection.
As things change and life’s everyday responsibilities become priority over fun nights out with friends, I think it’s very helpful to find small ways to still enjoy each day. I hope these practical tips will bring a bit of extra romance and joy to your normal routine. Thanks for reading and remember, progress, not perfection!
